Education Rights, International Women's Day, Black Panthers and more
Hi WSACers,
There is so much programming next week that I wanted to send out a reminder apart from our weekly meeting notes. Take a look:
1. WSAC's weekly meeting, mondays at 2:30pm in Coffman 202. All are invited.
2. Monday, March 1,7:00 p.m. Dhoruba Bin-Wahad(Lecture) University of Minnesota, Blegen Hall, Room 5, 269 19th Avenue South, Minneapolis.
In November 2009 Dhoruba Bin-Wahad, a
former U.S. political prisoner, leader of the Black Panther Party, and
member of the Black Liberation Army, was detained and deported from
the West Bank of occupied Palestine by Israeli authorities. He will discuss historic and current struggles against social
injustice and state violence in the U.S. and in Palestine, with
specific focus on political prisoners and institutions that repress
social movement mobilization within communities fighting oppression.
Join a wide array of Twin Cities organizations to hear this powerful
speaker, who challenges conventional wisdom and inspires people to
embrace social change.
Sponsored by: American Studies Department, (U
of M), Coalition for Palestinian Rights, Communities United Against
Police Brutality, Department of African American and African Studies
(U of M), International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, RNC 8 Defense
Committee, Scholars for Academic Justice, Scott and Carrie Support
Committee, Women’s Student Activist Collective, and the WAMM Middle
East Committee and others.
3. Join our friends at the Women's Center for Talk Like a Feminist Day:
Talk Like a Feminist Day (TLAFD) isn't just an excuse to quote awesome women
from history and encourage general grrrl power. It's an opportunity for students, staff and communities to unite and embrace the feminist within, to spread awareness about the inequalities still facing women and girls today, and to continue to foster changes in the climate toward women. This is the first TLAFD, and we hope that you'll join us and help us to make this a worldwide phenomenon! Stop by our table in Coffman on March 2nd from 11:30-1 PM for cookies and quotes! Or stop by our office/ check out our kit online at http://www1.umn.edu/women/ ! Don't forget to wear your feminist t-shirts (make your own, or purchase one at a store online, such as now.org or northernsun.com), and talk like a feminist all day!
4. Wed., March 3rd, 11:30am: Coalition Meeting for Campaign Save Our School in Coffman 202. We will be finalizing planning for the giant protest on March 4th. All invited!
5. Thursday, March 4th: National Day of Action for Education Rights! On campuses across the country, students, staff and faculty will be protesting the unjust practices of universities. At the U of M, labor unions, undergrads, and graduate student workers will come together to protest tuition hikes, layoffs, and furloughs. We demand that the university chop from the top: the highest paid administrators should take paycuts to save other jobs and work toward a reasonable tuition rate. Rally @ noon at Morrill Hall, and march at 1pm! It's gonna be huge, don't miss it!
6. Thurs., March 4th at 6pm in Coffman 202: film screening of "Highway Courtesans" and discussion. A story about an Indian woman growing up in prostitution. Free snacks. Part of WSAC's and Amnesty's Global Women film series.
7. Friday., March 5th at noon in Coffman 202: Bufandas by Yolanda. Join WSAC and the Women's Center for our weekly knitting group.
8. Sat., March 6th all day in the Coffman Great Hall: International Women's Day conference hosted by Advocates for Human Rights. Stop by the WSAC table between workshops!
9. Sun., March 7th at 3pm in Walker Church (3104 16th Av S MPLS): International Women's Day film screening: "The Eyes of the Rainbow: A Documentary about Assata Shakur." Film and discussion about Assata Shakur, the Black Panther leader who escaped from prison and was given political asylum in Cuba. Hosted by Freedom Road Socialist Organization. Free childcare and snacks provided.
That's all for now!
