SB1070

My favorite definition of feminism, by bell hooks, says feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. Since SB1070 is all kinds of oppressive, as are the two AZ laws passed forbidding ethnic studies programs in schools and requiring that teachers not have accents, we should definitely do something about it.

The mayors of San Fancisco and St Paul have called for an economic boycott of AZ, which made me a bit nervous at first because I wasn't sure who (lawmakers? undocumented people?) a boycott would hurt most. But the National Council of La Raza has endorsed it and they and other articles I've read seem to have adequately addressed those concerns, so I think we should get on board.

You can sign the petition to boycott here http://action.nclr.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1754 and you can put UMN Women's Student Activist Collective in the organization blank if you are so inclined.

If we hear of any queer/feminist conferences planned for AZ we should let each other know and send them some dissatisfied emails. If you know about different stuff from AZ that we are likely to spend money on, let each other and your other friends know and encourage them not to buy it.

definitely

I'll definitely be doing what I can- I can't even believe things like this can even be thought of let alone passed and supported by people.
