9/28 meeting notes
Hi WSACers,
Our second installment of our Global Women film series is tomorrow (Wed. 9/30) at 6pm. The film is “La Boda” (translation: “The Wedding”) and is about a Mexican girl coming of age in a migrant community. There will be free pizza and members of the Chicano/Latino student group La Raza will help lead the post-film discussion. Thanks to Amanda for her poster design. Will the folks who volunteered to distribute said posters stop by wsac today to pick them up? Thanks.
Immediately after the film/discussion, WSAC member Ami will be leading a tutorial about MN CAFÉ (Constitutional Amendment for Equality) Coalition. Women are STILL not equal to men under the constitution. If this pisses anyone off, they should stay and learn about what we can do.
The Save Our School Campaign is picking up. The campaign keeps popping up in the Daily (keep your eye out for the next sds article) and this weekend, 2 WSACers(Grace and Kira) will be heading to Chicago for the Fight Back Conference to learn economic justice campaign strategies.
Those of you wanting to fight the economic injustices of the university should go to Ferguson School of Music either Wed., Thurs, or Friday of this week. Each day at noon there will be people protesting the layoff of Nancy Wiswell—a music school clerical worker who has served the U for 39 years. Check out the Daily article: http://www.mndaily.com/2009/09/27/laid-clerical-worker-fights-back-0.
Sara, Grace, and UPCCer Drea had a successful trip to Fargo last week to defend the Red River Women’s Clinic from the 40 Days of Life campaign. The protesters try to “counsel” or harass patients entering the clinic for 40 Days. Thanks to WSAC for funding our trip to escort patients safely into the clinic!
Sex Ed for Everyone episode 2 will be premiered next wed., Oct. 7 at 7pm at the West Bank Auditorium! The short film was written, directed, and starring WSAC & friends, and is called “Consent.” Please come and watch all of us—including yours truly—act out the do’s and don’ts of consensual sex. We will have snacks and a discussion after. The event is part of the Women’s Center’s Discover Exceptional Women Week. Find the event on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=152927528254&index=1)and invite your friends! And stop by WSAC later this week to pick up flyers for your classes.
WSAC has endorsed the SDS Rally: U.S. Out of Afghanistan on Oct. 7th. We may even have a WSAC speaker at the rally, so come support the anti-war cry. Time and location TBD: stay tuned.
